L2P
What is the L2P program?
The L2P project is an initiative of the TAC and Vicroads which aims to provide an opportunity for disadvantaged young people aged from 16 to 21 to have access to supervised driving practice, enabling them to meet the minimum 120 hours of experience required to move from their Learner Permit to their Probationary drivers licence. The learner driver is matched with a volunteer driving mentor who will then supervise their driving practice on a regular basis. The Wimmera L2P Project operates in the Shires of Hindmarsh, West Wimmera, Yarriambiack and Horsham Rural City Council.
Why was L2P introduced?
The introduction of the new Graduated Licencing System which came into effect on July 1 2007 requires that all learner drivers aged under 21 years achieve a minimum of 120 hours supervised driving experience, which is certified and recorded by both the learner and supervising driver(s). For most young learner drivers the opportunity to achieve 120 hours of supervised driving practice will be generated through professional driving lessons and additional driving practice being provided by parents, extended family or close friends. However, there are a number of young people who will have considerable difficulty in accessing driving experience due to non availability of a vehicle or supervising driver (or both) on an ongoing basis. The L2P project is aimed to support this group of young people.
